Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo
Alpecin is a relatively new hair loss product. It was founded by a company based in Europe and marketed in the United States under the names Actifol and Rogaine. In its first few months it was a success because it worked for some people. This brand of treatment uses a proprietary technology to encourage the body to produce more hair, as well as block hair falls.
Alpecin’s website makes a lot of bold claims, such as that its shampoo contains a patented ingredient called Minoxidil, which has been clinically shown in clinical trials to re-grow hair follicles. Alpecin’s claim of a non-toxic formulation is also a huge selling point. It states that their shampoo contains “essential botanical oils” that are safe for human usage. However, when I tried Alpecin’s shampoo and conditioner for the first time, I could barely keep my hair in the shower. My scalp had an unpleasant odor and my hair looked and felt heavy.
According to Alpecin’s sales site, this shampoo “provides quick relief for men and women experiencing thinning, balding, and general hair loss.” They claim that its shampoo works to prevent baldness by blocking DHT, a leading cause of baldness, from attaching to the hair follicle. But, according to my review of Alpecin’s website and my personal experience using their shampoo, it doesn’t work at all. My two week supply of Alpecin-laced shampoo and conditioner ended up in the trash and I haven’t used it since.
Alpecin claims that its minoxidil-rich formula will reverse hair loss. I was able to find no clinical studies supporting this claim. It is also important to note that minoxidil, while effective at treating and preventing baldness, is a prescription drug and must be administered by a licensed medical practitioner. In addition, it can be potentially dangerous to combine minoxidil with certain other drugs, especially anti-seizure medications.
Alpecin offers two products that it markets as treatments for androgenetic alopecia: RemFader and Scalp Max. RemFader is a topical solution that is supposed to be applied twice a day and should be used in conjunction with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. According to RemFader’s web site, this combination “will reverse any current or future hair loss caused by enzymes, genetics, environmental factors, disease, or lifestyle factors.” Unfortunately, there are no clinical studies that support these claims.
Scalp Max is Alpecin’s partner in scalp-based treatment. It is also available as a shampoo. This male-pattern baldness treatment contains an ingredient called Minoxidil. The only study that directly supported the claim of Scalp Max hair growth is a small, short-term clinical trial that examined the effect of a three-month use on patients with male pattern baldness. No significant improvement was noted.
Alpecin also markets alpecin caffeine shampoo. According to Alpecin’s web site, this ingredient works by stimulating hair roots. “The hair roots start to develop earlier and stronger due to this stimulation. The hair also grows at a much faster rate after the stimulation, making your hair appear healthier and thicker.” However, another study conducted by the US National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease supported the view that there is no scientific evidence that alpecin caffeine shampoo is effective for female hair loss. This study also stated that there was no scientific evidence that alpecin shampoo was effective for male hair loss either.
Alpecin is a well known brand name for alpecin caffeine shampoo. The brand name for this product is owned by Novartis. Alpecin is one of the few shampoos on the market that contain the active ingredient minoxidil. Alpecin shampoos are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
